=={{int:filedesc}}== {{Information |Description=Quartzose sandstones in the Mississippian of Ohio, USA. This is an exposure of the Byer Sandstone in Newark, Ohio. The Byer is one of four members in the siliciclastics-dominated Logan Formation (Lower Mississippian) of eastern Ohio. It represents a relatively shallow marine deposit. Some body fossil-rich bedding planes are present. The fossils are typical of Paleozoic, shallow marine faunas: brachiopods, crinoids, bivalves, bryozoans, and occasional trilobites. The photo shows thin-bedded quartzose sandstones in the upper wall of an old quarry. Quarrying targeted the historically-significant "Byer Freestone" (see photos elsewhere in this album), which is a massive sandstone unit that was used as a building stone in central Licking County during the 1800s. This particular quarry targeted the Byer Freestone for use in building the Granville Inn, a famous restaurant in the nearby town of Granville. The thin-bedded sandstones above the massive freestone unit were unusable for building stone. This overburden was discarded (a couple large piles of this waste rock are present next to the quarry).
